‘The Bucket List’ is one component of your purpose. When it comes to redefining your ‘Bucket List’, the beauty of retirement is that time is no longer the limited resource it once was. Whilst it may still be our most valuable resource, you are lucky enough to have just inherited a load more of it. So what can you do with it?
Have you always wanted to play an instrument, but never had the time to learn? Have you always been embarrassed in foreign countries because you can’t speak the local lingo, but never had the time to learn it? Your ‘Bucket List’ should include these things too. You have already started to write your Bucket List when you completed the ‘Focusing on What’s Important to You’ exercise earlier on. You then expanded on it in ‘The Lifetime Stretch’ Exercise. So let’s refine your Bucket List further.
Each time I travel somewhere that involves a little more thought or research, I tend to write up a few key tips and things to enjoy for our clients that will be visiting there to help them improve their stay. You can find these at www.Dream-Retirement.com/travel. There are guides to places like South Africa, New Zealand and many more. We always encourage clients to add to the list so that it evolves and improves over time.
Imagine that you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs, now and in the future. How would you live your life? Would you change anything? Don’t hold back in imagining your dreams. Describe a life that is completely and richly yours.
Redefining Your Purpose
Retirement, or ‘your new life’, is all about finding your purpose and having the time to explore it. If you can do that, you will lead a life that is fulfilling at almost every turn. But finding your purpose is not always an easy exercise. If it were, everyone would know theirs, and life would be rosy. Many people will have found it, but won’t realise they have until they think back at what really makes them tick. Others that do realise it and, even better, are more proactive in thinking about it, tend to lead a much happier and fulfilling life, because they know where they are going and are happy with any steps that lead them towards it. I want you to be in the more proactive category, because I think it will make you happier, too.
You have probably heard of the Wright brothers, the first men to pilot an airplane, but fewer people know about Samuel Pierpont Langley, whose story features in a book called Start with Why, by Simon Sinek:
“Most people don’t know about Samuel Pierpont Langley and back in the early 20th century, the pursuit of powered manned flight was like the dotcom of the day. Everybody was trying it. Samuel Pierpont Langley had what you would assume to be the recipe for success. I mean, even now when we ask, ‘Why did your product or company fail?’ People always give you the same permutations of the same three things. Undercapitalized, the wrong people, bad market conditions. It’s always the same three things. So let’s explore that.”
“Samuel Pierpont Langley was given $50,000 by the War Department to figure out this flying machine. Given this was the early 1900s this was a substantial amount of money, so money was not the problem. He held a seat at Harvard and worked at the Smithsonian and was extremely well connected, recruiting the help of people like Dale Carnegie on the project. He knew all the big minds of the day. He hired the best minds money could find and the market conditions were fantastic. The New York Times followed him around everywhere and everyone was rooting for Langley. Then how come we have never heard of Samuel Pierpont Langley?”
“A few hundred miles away in Dayton, Ohio, lived Orville and Wilbur Wright. They had none of what we consider to be the recipe for success. They had no money, they paid for their dream with the proceeds from their bicycle shop. Not a single person on the Wright brothers’ team had a college education. Not even Orville or Wilbur. And the New York Times followed them around nowhere. The difference was that Orville and Wilbur were driven by a cause, a purpose, a belief. They believed that if they could figure out this flying machine, it will change the course of the world.”
As in the case of the Wright brothers, with a purpose you will find a drive, reward and fulfilment, which became a recipe for success throughout history. If you can harness just a small amount of that purpose, you can build a wonderful new life.
You have already started defining your purpose by completing the ‘Visualise Your Passing’ exercise. In the book, The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Fail, which I consider one of the best business books ever written, Michael Gerber uses this exercise to help you define your purpose both personally and in business.
This has hopefully given you some good ideas, but we still need to refine what you have learned and put it into a coherent plan.
