Sporting achievements are often considered to be great when the team or individual conquers adversity. Triumphing despite the odds being stacked against you makes the accomplishment seem even more incredible.
Look at people like Boris Becker, who won the 1985 Wimbledon Championship at the tender age of 17; or George Foreman, who won the boxing World Heavy Weight title at 45. Their age was against them- one ‘too young’ and the other ‘too old’ to theoretically succeed. But what they both demonstrated was that the number of years you’ve spent on this planet is irrelevant; if you want to succeed, age is not a barrier.
But I’ve recently learnt about an incredible man, who exemplified my point to the extreme.
At the start of this year, 2017, French cyclist Robert Marchand clocked up 14 miles in 1 hour at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines Velodrome and has taken the top spot in a brand-new category. Now, if you’re a cyclist, you’re possibly thinking, “So what? Bradley Wiggins cycled just under 34 miles in 1 hour in 2015.” But, there is a huge difference between the two men: Wiggins is 36; Marchand is 105.
Born on 26 November 1911, Marchand has attributed his health to a diet comprised of lots of fruit and vegetables, a little meat and not too much coffee. He spends an hour every day on the cycling home-trainer and loves his sport. He told APF News Agency that “I am not here to be champion. I am here to prove that at 105 years old you can still ride a bike.” And boy has he done that!
But Robert Marchand has had adversity in his life and certainly wasn’t dealt an easy hand: He was a prisoner of war in World War Two, worked as a lorry driver and sugarcane planter in Venezuela, and spent time as a lumberjack in Canada. He’s shown that it doesn’t matter what life throws at you, you can do whatever you put your mind to.
To reach 105 is an achievement in itself, but to still be competing and setting new records is phenomenal! Marchand set himself some goals, put a plan in place, and executed it perfectly. He evidently lives and breathes his passion every day- which is possibly why he has been going strong for over a century.
Don’t let age, or any other ‘limiting beliefs’, as Tony Robbins would say, stop you from achieving your dreams. Decide what you want, maybe by putting together your Bucket List and set out your goals. By structing your life in this way, you are far more likely to hit your targets and get exactly what you want. Who knows, you could be the next person setting world records well into you 100s!
