Is 60 Too Old to Lose Weight?

I speak to so many people who have spent every day since they were in their teens on a diet. The perpetual struggle between a trim waist line and a tasty bag of chips has of course sparked a multi-millionaire pound diet industry, and it’s no surprise. Hand on heart, I think we’ve all tried to lose weight at some point in our lives; whether it’s losing a couple of pounds after an indulgent Christmas or a few stone after years of ‘comfort living’. But does there come a point in your life where you can just stop trying? Is 60 too old to lose weight?

I am a huge advocate of healthy living. Not only can it prolong your life, so you can be around for your loved ones, but, from a selfish perspective, you can do more of what you love, and keep doing it for longer. Not only that, but a healthy lifestyle will make you feel amazing; I wake up every day feeling energised and raring to go!

Healthy living is a huge topic, and one I’d love to explore with you in the future, but for now I want to focus on the topic of weight loss. Firstly, I want to tell you that you should not feel ashamed. Like I said, nearly everyone has, at some point, needed to shed some excess timber. And there are thousands of exciting ways to do it!

Secondly, I want to dispel the misconception that you will reach a point in your life where you are too old to lose weight. I’m constantly asked “Is 60 too old to lose weight?” “Will my metabolism be too slow to lose weight when I’m over 70?” and even “Is it OK to let yourself go when you retire?” My answer? No, no, NO!!!

Am-I-Too-Old-to-Work-Out

You are never too old to lose weight. I recently read about an inspirational lady called Betty Jones, who shed a whopping 7st! Betty, from Carlton in South Yorkshire, tipped the scales at 17 stone. Her doctor told her that she needed to lose weight so she could have life-saving open heart surgery. In this try or die situation, Betty decided to give it her all.

Embarking on a change of diet and a strict five-times-a-week gym routine, the great-grandmother has slimmed down to just over 10 stone. She’s also been bitten by the fitness bug, buying an exercise bike and learning to swim. She has done incredibly, and did I mention that she’s 92?

Mrs. Jones is someone to look up to. Not only has she completely turned her life around for the healthier, she has also now found the confidence to follow her passions in life, enrolling at her local college to study tailoring, cake decorating and healthy eating.

So is 60 too old to lose weight? Well, if 92 year old Betty can do it, then of course not! Weight loss is about discipline, commitment and determination, but more importantly, it about leverage. Betty Jones lost weight, because she was told it was that or death. If I asked you to lose 2 stone in the next 3 months, not only would it be bad for you, but it would also be very difficult. If I held a gun to your head and asked you again, I am guessing you would find it a lot easier. Successfully becoming healthier is about getting enough leverage over yourself, so that the alternative is so much worse. One way to do this, is to project forward in your mind the outcome of not making this change. Really visualise how bad things will be if you don’t do it. Now that’s your leverage. We also have an exercise in our Dream Retirement workbook called ‘Limiting Beliefs’ that will help you with this. You can download the workbook here.

It may be painful, but it’s worth it; reaching your goals is one of the most rewarding feelings out there. The weight loss journey may also teach you are few things about yourself, or give you the courage to get out there and follow your dreams.
